MANILA – Kapamilya star Vice Ganda commands one of the biggest social media platforms, reaching millions of followers across her official accounts.
Student-athletes likewise have a massive following on social media, especially in the digital age where they get more exposure and attention even from the general public.
But having a massive platform can sometimes be a double-edged sword, as not all the comments and messages will be positive.
This is why Vice shared her advice on social media use that not only applied to the student-athletes but to everyone.

"I just want to advise them, not just athletes, young people, to not consume so much of the internet, to not consume so much of social media. Because kung gaano karami yung cino-consume mo, kung gaano kalaki yung cino-consume mo na social media hindi mo nararamdaman na cino-consume ka at nauubos ka din," the Kapamilya star said after the UAAP Season 89 opening ceremony on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
"Social media is not, is no longer as beautiful as it was. Diba? Parang mas toxic na siya kayusa sa fun, mas negative na siya kaysa sa positive. Kaya athletes or non-athletes, I would suggest na don't spend too much of your time," Vice added.
The comedian and TV host reminded the youth there's more to life than social media and they should spend more time offline.
"Social media is not life. Social media is not education. Social media is, it should be just a small part of your life to enjoy," Vice said.
"Mas marami pa silang oras na kinokonsumo sa social media kaysa sa pakikipagusap sa mga magulang nila, sa mga kapatid nila, sa pagkain nang sabay-sabay sa lamesa, sa pag-aaral na mga dapat sa assignment," she pointed out.
For student-athletes, Vice said spending too much social media by reading comments online can also affect their performance during games.

"Imagine mo kung sobrang galing ka na athlete tapos masyado kang gugol na gugol sa social media. Tapos nakabasa ka ng pangit na comment about you and your performance, that will affect your mental health. And if it affects your mental health, that will affect your entire performance as an athlete," she explained.
"Kaya yun. Kung kayang wala, wala," Vice said.
Even though she boasts of millions of followers on social media, the Kapamilya star shared that she barely goes online, only being informed about what is happening by her social media team.
Aside from her social media presence, Vice was given a platform to reach the youth by headlining the first-ever Kickoff Show as part of the UAAP Season 89 opening ceremony.
Vice used the UAAP platform to challenge the Gen Zs to be part of the conversation in shaping the country and to choose leaders that will help them win in life.
