After joining showbiz as part of ABS-CBN’s 2010 reality singing competition Star Power: Sharon's Search for the Next Female Pop Superstar, Kayla Rivera (then known as K-La) has come a long way from being an aspiring artist. From there, she went on to become a MYX veejay as well as pursuing a career in singing and acting. But it was in 2022 when she joined FM station Monster Radio that she became a full-pledged radio deejay.

In an exclusive interview with PUSH ABS-CBN during the media launch of Gold’s Gym Powered by Metcon at the Venice Grand Canal Mall in Taguig City earlier this month, the RX93.1 deejay revealed why she was taking a step back from working almost everyday at the station.

“I was on six days a week. And then sometimes i would be doing a musical at the same time. Sometimes I would do radio work and then go straight to rehearsals. So parang it’s a full day of using my voice na. I was really happy to be doing it, but then, at the same time, it’s was also like how sustainable is this for my voice as well? So I went to my ENT and he took a look at my vocal chords and there were some concerns so parang, my ENT told me, ‘Where do you really want to be using your voice?’ That’s why I’ve lessened my days now with radio to two days a week,” she shared with PUSH ABS-CBN.

Despite her doctor’s diagnosis, Kayla admits she does not see herself quitting her job as a deejay anytime soon. “Well, I really do enjoy kasi. Just being on air and being able to talk to our listeners, with Rico (Robles) my partner, it still is such a joy to do, kuwentuhan and also when we get the chance to meet other artists, exploring the local scene and the international scene. I love music. That’s really what started my career here is singing and music. So I feel like having the chance to just be in that environment and learning about other artists from the OPM and international scene, it’s just such a blessing,” she admitted.

After getting engaged last December to her non-showbiz boyfriend Miguel Jimenez, Kayla admits she has a couple of busy months ahead, on top of preparing for a new theatrical run of the Trumpets musical Joseph The Dreamer. “We’re having small wedding in July and then we’re having a big wedding in January. It’s not a huge wedding but just family and friends and those dearest to us. We wanted to do it in a church, so the first one will be in a church and then the big one will be an outdoor garden wedding. Miguel and I met through Joseph the Dreamer. He was doing the marketing side of things. He was really hands on in the production side of things and then I was in the show. So we met in 2020. Parang full circle and parang just perfect timing lang,” she shared.
