(UPDATED) Philippine bet Ahtisa Manalo brought the spirit of Philippine fiestas to the Miss Universe stage in Thailand on Wednesday with a national costume that merges María Clara elegance and colorful festival traditions.
Manalo’s look, which she also posted on her social media accounts, centers on the traje de mestiza, featuring the classic camisa with bell sleeves, a long saya, and a pañuelo draped over the shoulders.
The ensemble pays tribute to María Clara, the "Noli Me Tangere" character long associated with the archetype of the ideal Filipina and the evolution of the modern terno.
Designed by Mak Tumang, the costume is made from hand-embroidered piña, a textile woven from pineapple leaf fibers and known for its sheen and cultural significance.
Tumang described the design as “a tapestry of artistry that reflects the joy and creativity of our people,” and said it honors the women who shaped the nation’s history.
The skirt, built from more than 65,000 individual "petals," incorporates elements from several major Philippine festivals: the Giant Lantern Festival of Pampanga, the Pahiyas Festival of Lucban, and Baguio’s Panagbenga Festival. Its colors and textures reference themes of hope, unity, abundance, and the country’s tradition of grand floral celebrations.

Manalo said the costume reflects the spirit and vibrancy of the Philippines.
“With every step, I become the living festival of the Philippines — carrying the brilliance of a thousand lanterns, the warmth of Filipino hospitality, and the timeless grace of María Clara onto the Miss Universe stage,” she wrote on Facebook.
The look was styled by Patty Yap, with makeup by Mickey See, hair by Renz Pangilinan, and photography by Seven Barretto.
Meanwhile, Tumang also encouraged fans to support Manalo, calling to “unite and push for a historic 3-peat Best National Costume win.”
The 74th Miss Universe coronation night will be held on November 21. Manalo is aiming for the Philippines' fifth crown after Catriona Gray, Pia Wurtzbach, Margie Moran, and Gloria Diaz.
