For John Bonifacio, the road to the crown was more than a showcase of physique, style, and presence. It was also a chance to carry with him a lesson from the man who taught him one of life’s simplest—and most enduring—values: respect.
The Macabebe, Pampanga native made history on Saturday, September 13, 2026 (Manila time), after being crowned as the Philippines’ first Mister Cosmopolitan in Nha Trang, Vietnam.
Bonifacio bested several delegates to claim the title in the fourth edition of the pageant, adding to an already impressive showing in the preliminary rounds, where he earned the Best Physique and Best Catwalk awards.
But beyond the looks and walk, it was Bonifacio’s words that offered a glimpse into the values he carried into the competition.
During the speech round, he reflected on what being a gentleman means to him—not simply in the way he dresses or looks, but the way he treats other people.
For Bonifacio, that belief was deeply personal because this was what his father taught him.
“He taught me that regardless of who they are—rich, poor, or what gender they choose—respect must always come first.”
He added: “in today’s generation, many [have] forgotten how to treat others with respect, but I am here right now standing in front of you to be a reminder to each and everyone, especially to the youth out there, to [treat] everyone with respect and kindness, because I believe the things you do in life reflect in return.”
Onstage, Bonifacio also brought Filipino craftsmanship and identity to the competition.
During the formal wear competition, he walked in an ensemble by Darwis Ismaeili. His national costume, meanwhile, drew inspiration from one of the country’s symbols of rural life: the carabao.
Designed by Julius Andrada Nastor, the costume portrayed the carabao as a symbol of strength, hard work, and dedication of Filipino farmers. It also incorporated the bahay kubo, evoking the spirit of bayanihan.
Bonifacio ultimately emerged on top of the competition, with Nkosikhona Roro of South Africa named first runner-up. Tong Sanchai Manimon of Thailand finished second runner-up, Enes Cetinkaya of Turkiye placed third runner-up, while Fran Caceres of Spain was fourth runner-up.
In his post-pageant interview, he admitted that he had been nervous before the winner was announced. When his name was called, the emotion became difficult to contain.
Amid the celebration, he expressed his gratitude to the people who supported him throughout the competition, especially to his father whose memory Bonifacio could carry home alongside the crown.
His first Mister Cosmopolitan title made history for the Philippines, but for Bonifacio, it also became a tribute to the man who taught him what it means to be a gentleman.
