Rita Avila’s critically acclaimed versatility as an actress stays at the forefront of the unpredictable “Someone, Someday.” Given her undisputed dramatic dexterity, there is no doubt that it was an absolute delight for her to portray one of the show’s unsettling characters, Mariela, the perplexing mother of Bea (Maja Salvador).
Together, their mother-daughter tandem introduces both the intriguing and heartbreaking twists, more so when it was revealed that Mariela’s mental health began to fall apart right after her husband left their family and when her eldest daughter, Abi (Karylle), passed away.
The conflicting feelings of annoyance and sympathy become heightened whenever Rita appears on screen as Mariela, including the troubling situation when she started to wish misfortune upon Billy (Kathryn Bernardo), whom she believes is the greatest enemy of her daughter Bea.
Going deeper into their impressive performances, the on-screen clashes between Rita and Kathryn were so brilliantly convincing that seeing their real-life closeness behind the scenes feels surreal. In a social media post by Rita herself, she was seen smiling brightly beside Kathryn, wearing clothes that were different from Mariela’s motherly wardrobe and Billy’s CEO style.
While the two actresses frequently feud on screen, they definitely know how to enjoy the happier times during the short breaks on set. In another rare selfie, Rita looked radiant in her Mariela persona alongside Kathryn’s polished Billy.
“Dahil lagi nya akong nakikita sa set na in character, naninibago sha pag normal ako… At yun na nga, magtatawanan kami!” Rita captioned.
The mother-daughter bond between Rita and Maja is just as strong off-screen, as witnessed in a candid moment of them leaning on each other between takes, complete with Rita affectionately dubbing Maja her “BEAutiful daughter.”

Before they shared heartwarming scenes, Mariela would often degrade Bea, harshly comparing her to her departed sister. She soon realized that Bea is the only family she has left and that losing her, particularly because of Caloy’s influence or Billy’s actions, is her deepest fear.
Last but not least, Rita didn’t forget to appreciate her glam team, who would spend over three hours applying her burn prosthetics. This realistic detail in Mariela’s characterization highlights a different kind of pain and a vivid reminder that Mariela was also a victim of abandonment by her ex-husband.
