“Bakit ka ba sorry nang sorry? Wala ka namang kasalanan. Tsaka hindi mo naman kasalanan kung hindi mo ako mahal.”
This line was spoken by Carson (Maja Salvador) in the 2017 offbeat romantic comedy film I’m Drunk, I Love You, directed by JP Habac.
The film follows Carson and Dio (Paulo Avelino), best friends who have spent their college years at the University of the Philippines Diliman, bonding over beer and music while creating memories together.
But while their friendship feels effortless to Dio, Carson has been carrying a secret for seven years.
She has been in love with him.
With their college graduation approaching, Dio invites Carson on a spontaneous trip to La Union. Their close friend Jason Ty (Dominic Roco) joins them, providing both comic relief and support for Carson.

While in La Union, Carson tells Jason that she wants to graduate from more than just college. After seven years of loving Dio, she wants to finally graduate from her feelings for him.
Throughout their trip, Carson continues to be the friend Dio has always known. They drink, listen to music, eat their favorite candy, and spend time together as they always have.
But the situation becomes more painful when Dio reconciles with his former girlfriend, Pathy (Jasmine Curtis-Smith), who eventually joins them on the trip.
Even while her own heart is breaking, Carson continues to be there for him.
Eventually, while she was drunk, Carson tells Dio the truth that she has been in love with him for seven years.
The confession leads to a kiss between them, but Carson stops it. Even after finally admitting her feelings, she refuses to let the moment become something out of unreciprocated love.
After her confession, Carson becomes quiet throughout the trip due to the pain of having a love that has never been equally returned. For Carson, the painful truth is no longer something she can avoid.
Before they return to Manila, Dio apologizes to her. But instead of accepting his apology as though he had done something wrong, Carson reminds him that he does not need to be sorry for something he cannot force, maintaining: “Bakit ka ba sorry nang sorry? Wala ka namang kasalanan. Tsaka hindi mo naman kasalanan kung hindi mo ako mahal.”
The power of Carson's words comes from how she separates rejection from wrongdoing.
She is hurt, having spent seven years loving someone who cannot give her the same kind of love. But she understands that Dio did not commit anything wrong simply because he could not love her back.
That makes the moment particularly painful because Carson is not asking Dio to change his mind.
She is accepting the truth.
Her decision is also reflected in what happens immediately before the line. Carson does not give in to the kiss given by Dio simply because she has spent years waiting for that moment. She stops herself because she knows that being physically close to Dio is not the same as being loved by him.

Instead of settling for a relationship built around uncertainty, Carson chooses to accept his feelings and protect herself from continuing to hope for something he cannot give at the time.
After their return to Manila, Dio apologizes to Carson again outside of her home. She goes inside and cries with her mother, allowing herself to finally feel the heartbreak she had been carrying for years.
The next day, Carson attends her graduation without Dio, who chooses not to march.
Yet their story does not end with them becoming strangers.
After celebrating her graduation with family and friends, Carson and Dio meet privately. While drinking beer together, they acknowledge the importance of their friendship and once again shared laughs with one another.
That is what makes the film's ending different from the usual romantic story.

Carson does not get the person she spent seven years loving. Dio does not suddenly realize that he has secretly loved her all along. There is no grand declaration that erases everything that happened.
Instead, Carson truly graduates from longing for someone she loved.
She allowed herself to move forward while keeping the friendship that meant so much to both of them.
Carson’s iconic line acknowledges that heartbreak can exist without anyone being the villain.
Sometimes, one person loves more than the other. Sometimes, two people can have genuine affection for each other and still not be meant to become a couple. And sometimes, accepting that truth is the only way to save yourself.
The iconic line itself has also found new life online, making its way to TikTok as netizens recreated it using different emotions and styles. Celebrities even joined the trend, including Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Collab Edition 2.0 Kapuso Big Winner Caprice Cayetano and Miss Behave stars Reign Parani, Andi Abaya, and Rans Rifol.
The story’s honesty is one of the reasons I’m Drunk, I Love You. continues to resonate with Filipino audiences almost a decade after its release.
At a time when many romantic films build toward a happy ending where the two leads eventually end up together, the film chose something more uncomfortable but familiar. It showed that love is not always reciprocated, and that rejection does not necessarily erase the years of friendship, memories, and affection that came before it.
The film's bittersweet ending became part of what made it memorable.
During a virtual roundtable with director JP in April 2020, Maja was asked whether she would change the ending of the film. She remained firm that Carson and Dio's story ended exactly as it should.
“Kung paano natapos, iyon talaga,” she said. “Isang malaking dahilan ng pagtanggap ng ‘I’m Drunk, I Love You.’ ay dahil hindi siya nagtapos na mag-end kami together.”
She further explained why the film's ending felt good to her: “Realidad. Kasi may parte sa buhay natin na may ganoon kang kuwento.”
In October 2018, JP hinted that a sequel was in the works. In January the following year, he said he was writing the script with Kristin Barrameda.
However, no further details about the planned sequel have been released.
