“I see dead people.”
This line was popularized by Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) in the 1999 psychological-thriller film The Sixth Sense, directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
The film follows Cole, a quiet and socially isolated young boy living in Philadelphia who carries a terrifying secret that he is afraid to share with anyone. Cole's life changes when he begins seeing people who are no longer alive. The experience leaves him frightened and confused, especially because the people around him do not understand what he is going through.
His mother, Lynn (Toni Collette), worries about her son's behavior and the signs that he may be struggling emotionally. At school, Cole is also treated as an outsider, making him even more hesitant to reveal what he sees.
He eventually meets Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis), a child psychologist who becomes determined to help him. When Malcolm begins working with Cole, he initially believes the boy's behavior may be connected to the same kind of psychological problems he had seen before.
But Cole remains terrified of telling him the truth. He knows that people already consider him strange, and he fears that Dr. Malcolm will think the same if he reveals what has been happening to him.
But eventually, Cole tells Dr. Malcolm the truth.
“I see dead people,” he revealed.
During the scene, Cole does not say it with the confidence of someone revealing a supernatural ability. He says it as a frightened child finally admitting the truth about something that has been haunting him.
He explains that the dead walk around like ordinary people, unaware that they have died. Some appear confused, while others frighten him. Cole cannot simply turn the ability off, leaving him constantly exposed to people and experiences that nobody else can see.
The emotional weight of the scene comes from the fact that Cole is not looking for attention, but for someone who will believe him.

At first, Dr. Malcolm doubts him and considers whether Cole is experiencing hallucinations. Soon after, Dr. Malcolm realizes that Cole may truly be communicating with the dead. Instead of teaching the kid how to escape his ability, the doctor encourages him to understand it. He suggests that perhaps the people Cole sees have unfinished business and that he may be able to help them. While initially terrified, Cole decides to face his fear.
Meanwhile, Dr. Malcolm begins to understand that Cole's ability has also helped him confront his own unfinished business. The iconic line was a clue that introduces audiences to Cole's greatest fear while also quietly opening the door to the film's larger mystery.

The line became iconic because of how simply it is delivered by Haley Joel that captures the vulnerability of a young boy who has spent so long being afraid that saying the truth feels like a release.
With his performance as Cole, Haley later earned the Best Performance by a Younger Actor award from the 2000 Saturn Awards. The film was also named Best Horror Film from the same award giving body.
The movie also earned six nominations from the Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Haley and Best Picture, although it won none.
According to Variety, the film had a production budget of $40 million of around ₱2.4 billion, which they made back in just two weeks.
With its run, the film became the second-highest grossing movie of 1999 at the domestic box office after earning $672 million worldwide or around ₱41.4 billion.
