Julie Andrews has revealed that she will not be returning for the upcoming The Princess Diaries 3.
In an interview with InStyle, the award-winning actress explained that she considers herself retired and believes the new film can move forward without her character, Queen Clarisse Renaldi.
"I think I probably passed… I think I’m retired, really, would be about the best description for that,” she said.
Julie also shared that the film’s creative team had repeatedly approached her about reprising her role.
“[The film’s creative team] asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it. It was very, very hard to say ‘no,’ but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride, and this one I felt would flourish very well and wouldn’t need Granny going in there at my age," the screen icon stated.
Julie first starred in The Princess Diaries in 2001 alongside Anne Hathaway, who played Mia Thermopolis. She reprised her role as Queen Clarisse in the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
The veteran actress recently made a rare public appearance at the seventh World Parkinson Congress in Arizona in May.
Julie has largely stayed away from the public eye in recent years. Prior to the event, her last major public appearance was at Carol Burnett’s 90th birthday celebration in 2023.
Despite keeping a low profile, Julie has remained active in the entertainment industry through the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, where she lends her voice to the mysterious narrator Lady Whistledown.

Meanwhile, Anne recently shared an update on the highly anticipated third installment of The Princess Diaries.
In a July interview with SiriusXM, Anne shared that the production schedule for The Princess Diaries 3 has yet to be finalized.
"I am busy making baby number three and that has sort of taking the place of knowing when I can exactly make Princess Diaries 3," she shared.
Anne revealed in June that she and her husband, Adam Shulman, are expecting their third child.
While filming dates remain uncertain, the actress said there has been encouraging progress in shaping the movie's story.
"But I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think that we are moving in the right direction," she relayed.
Anne also disclosed that the team opted to rework the screenplay after finding a new creative direction for the third installment.
"The script we were working on, we kinda had a start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants. But we all feel really good that it is gonna be the one," she said.
