Nadine Lustre said Wednesday the person she filed a complaint against over “relentless and malicious attacks” online has been identified and sentenced.
Lustre filed the complaint in 2025, citing a possible violation of the Safe Spaces Act.
“Around end of April, that is when I met the person. Even if you look at it in different ways, hindi talaga kasi OK sinabi niya. He was given a sentence and of course rehabilitation as well. He will go through seminars on gender sensitivity,” Lustre said in an interview in Quezon City.
“Nag-comment siya and then noong nag-advise sa akin legal counsel ko to take action, pinahanap nila. Pinahanap talaga siya. And then noong nahanap, we served him the legal documents.”
Lustre said she decided to pursue legal action after learning how the comments deeply affected several victims, adding that the overwhelming response convinced her the incident should not be dismissed.
“A lot of people messaged me about it. It did not sit right with me not being able to do anything and I knew I could,” she recalled.
“Noong una hinayaan ko lang but after a few days people were so triggered. And a lot of people said, 'Hindi talaga okay sinabi niya.' I'm used to harshest things people can throw. Sanay na ako. But when I saw messages from different people reaching out, that was when I realized I can’t let this pass.”
For Lustre, it was important for her to send a message that “harmful behavior” on social media still has consequences and that those responsible can be held accountable.
“I wanted to at least let people know, you can’t just say those things on social media. There is always a way to trace and find you,” she said.
“Nag-apologize siya. Grabe talaga kasi comment niya. A lot of people told me na-trigger sila. You know people who were victims, they were emotional about it.”
The actress, who stars in the Viu romance series "Love, Siargao," said she was determined to “push for social media to be a safe space for everyone.”
“I want to be sensitive about it. But unfortunately this is something we want to bring to light. Social media is a warzone now, people can say the harshest things. I am hoping this is the start of social media at least for people who are used to doing bad things bashing, harsh words, wanting harm, for them to know they are not safe,” she said.
