De La Salle University rookie Joaquin Tovera against National University in the UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament. UAAP Media.MANILA — Joaquin Tovera was just what De La Salle University needed as the Green Archers opened their title-retention bid with a gutsy victory.
The 18-year-old Filipino-American provided stability as La Salle escaped National University, 89-87, on Sunday in their UAAP Season 89 opener, finishing with 22 points and three steals.

For Green Archers head coach Topex Robinson, Tovera’s presence was crucial, especially with their main gunner Jacob Cortez drawing plenty of attention from the opposition.
“This year, all the other teams will never forget Jacob. So obviously, him scoring that much, contributing on both ends, really helped us a lot,” said Robinson of Tovera, who also had one rebound and one assist.
One of the prized guards in this year’s rookie class, Tovera’s move to La Salle was eventful, to say the least.
The MVP of the 2026 FIBA Under-18 Asia Cup SEABA qualifiers was previously committed to University of the Philippines and was even part of the Fighting Maroons’ roster for the 19th FilOil Preseason Cup.
Even before the tournament ended, however, Tovera had a change of heart and moved to Taft Avenue, where he had close ties given his family’s connection with Jacob and Mikey Cortez.

For Robinson, the way Tovera handled the balancing act between his responsibilities with Gilas Pilipinas Youth and his move to La Salle was a testament to the rookie’s character, which has also contributed to the team’s faith in him.
“One of the things that we put a premium on is coachability, and emotional stamina,” said Robinson. “It’s kinda a see-saw for him, it’s been a challenging experience for him, so what kinda stood out is him being coachable.”
With La Salle facing bigger targets this year as defending champions, Robinson said Tovera’s composure on and off the floor is exactly what the team needs, as seen in his stellar UAAP debut.
“It’s nice to have somebody who can provide support for the team,” said Robinson. “Having a young guy together with our veterans is really going to be a big help moving forward.”
The two-time UAAP champion mentor also reminded Tovera that things will only get more challenging, but Robinson is confident that their newest floor general is more than capable of handling the pressure.
“It’s just going to get tougher from here on, and he knows that,” said Robinson. “He’s young, he’s going to make mistakes, but we just remind him that everybody is allowed to make mistakes.”
