In a statement released Tuesday evening, the league said the extension would allow the institution to “complete its internal investigation and submit its report” on the June 8 drowning incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, which claimed the lives of Adili and Baterbonia.

The original deadline for Ateneo’s independent fact-finding body was July 15, but it has now been moved to July 24.

The UAAP also noted that its next steps will be based on the findings of Ateneo, the league itself, and the appropriate government agencies, with possible sanctions to be imposed in accordance with the UAAP By-Laws and applicable rules and regulations.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has already submitted referral reports to the Department of Justice (DOJ), which could lead to criminal charges against resigned Ateneo men’s basketball team head coach Tab Baldwin and the other individuals deemed responsible for the incident.

On July 8, the NBI said it was eyeing the filing of reckless imprudence resulting in two counts of homicide against Baldwin, strength and conditioning coaches CJ Elumba and Grant Dearns, assistant coaches Reynaldo Jacinto Jr., Dean Caesar Castaño, Sandro Nicholas Soriano, and Hernan Ameer Domingo, and physical therapist John Eric Rueca.

The NBI is also seeking the filing of simple negligence resulting in two counts of homicide against Ateneo athletic director Emmanuel Fernandez, as well as Francisco Zubia III, Frederick Zubia, and Yedda Mary Molina Rubio, who were identified as the owners and co-manager of Hermanos Leisure & Agri-Farm Resort.

For its part, the DOJ said Monday that the recommendations made by the NBI and the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) have been consolidated.

The CIDG had previously filed anti-hazing complaints.

No cases have been officially filed in court.
