“It’s embarrassing, it’s heartbreaking,” said the Red Warriors’ star big man, who remained consistent with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, one block, and one assist in their 77-84 loss to Far Eastern University on Saturday.
“It’s really, really, really heartbreaking, not just for me but for the school and the fans,” he stressed.
UE’s 20-game losing streak which extends to Round 2 of Season 87 in 2024 is the third longest in UAAP history. Adamson University holds the top spot with 35 (1999 to 2002), while University of the Philippines is second with 27 (2012 to 2014).
That is why — despite him, Wello Lingolingo, John Abate, and young stars Dylan Despi and Kris Lagat serving as silver linings — Momowei saw nothing positive with how they performed.
“There is not much to say, honestly. Coming into this season, I thought we had a chance,” he said. “Finishing 0-14 was never in my plans. I’m just speechless right now, but it is what it is.”
But what it actually serves as, is added motivation if he decides to come back next year.
“I think I didn’t lead the team enough. I feel that I didn’t do too much on my part,” said Momowei, who captains the squad alongside Lingolingo and Abate.
“I have never done this before, and it has so much pressure. You have to lead, get everyone together. So, on the other hand, this is a motivation to come back next year and work harder,” he continued.
However, the keyword in this is “if,” as Momowei’s return is something that is still up in the air right now.
“I don’t know. We’ll see. Right now, I don’t know,” he said.
Should Momowei transfer to another UAAP school, he will forfeit his two remaining seasons of eligibility due to the league's new rules.
