MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is urging several agencies to come up with a new class suspension announcement scheme to better inform parents and students about the postponement of classes during inclement weather, Malacañang said on Thursday, a day after the Chief Executive convened several Cabinet members in the Palace.
The President wants a new class suspension system because of rapidly changing weather patterns, Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said.
“Kailangan pa aralin para hindi magkaroon ng miscommunication ang mga magulang at bata kung kailan papasok o hindi,” she said in a press conference.
“Ang proposal po kasi is sana magmumula sa local government. Kailangan magkaroon ng pagtutugma para hindi magkakagulo kung ia-announce ng mayor, governor o DepEd,” she said.
“Pinapamadali po ito ng Pangulo,” she said.
Some students frustrated by last-minute class suspension
The Second Congressional Commission on Education earlier found that in School Year 2025-2026, “a typical public elementary school lost approximately 20 teaching days to hazard-related suspensions” or “roughly one in every ten days in the official school calendar.”
This “translates to approximately 1.4 days of reading progress lost for every day classes are suspended,” the panel said.
