MANILA — Atasha Muhlach, the lead star of the upcoming musical “Bongga Ka Day,” graced the red carpet at the Preview Ball last week.
Speaking to ABS-CBN News, Muhlach addressed the criticisms directed at her after clips from the musical’s press presentation went viral. Netizens had criticized the budding actress’s vocal and dancing skills, with some commenting that she was not “lead material.”
“I’m just here to work. I’m just here to try to do my best, to work hard, and not take anything for granted,” she said when asked how she manages the bashing.
She noted that she understands the need to work extra hard: “Because in life, there are really no shortcuts, which is why my priority is keeping my head down and working. Making sure I don’t step on anyone’s toes or do bad to anyone.”
Asked if the negative comments affected her, Muhlach admitted that they did.
“Siyempre naman, tao pa rin ako, nasasaktan naman ako pero okay naman. It’s part of it, it’s part of the process, it’s showbiz. And my end goal at the end of the day is to make people happy, make the audience happy. And I hope they get entertained and enjoy the show. That’s really my goal,” she said.
As for whether she aims to prove her critics wrong, Muhlach emphasized a different mindset. “Not really prove them wrong, but more so just for everyone to have fun. I wanna make sure I do this the best that I can.”
Part of her preparation involves keeping fit and stage-ready.
At a separate event, Muhlach showcased a toned physique. She told ABS-CBN News that she has been hitting the gym regularly not just to look good, but to build stamina for the theater run.
“For the stamina, for the endurance, for all the productions and dancing that we’re doing. For the first time to actually do a full run-through and not feel tired is a great feeling.”
When asked about the advice her superstar parents, Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzalez, gave her amid the barrage of criticism, she shared: “Somewhat along the lines of that, which is just keep your feet on the ground and to work hard. There are no shortcuts in life; anything great comes with a lot of hard work and discipline.”
“Bongga Ka Day: The Musical” opens on September 18 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater at Newport World Resorts in Pasay City.
