Who would think that a nursing undergraduate, who initially came to the United Arab Emirates in 2011 on a tourist visa with no plans to work or settle permanently in a foreign land, would one day be recognized as one of the honorees at the recently concluded Global Filipino Star Icon Awards in Dubai?
That’s the story of Aquino Plotado, who joined the roster of awardees like Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, seasoned broadcast journalist Atom Araullo, educator and entrepreneur Carl E. Balita, and many more.
The momentous event proudly celebrated Filipino excellence and gathered distinguished leaders, icons, and emerging changemakers from around the world on the global stage, during a prestigious ceremony held at Kempinski Central Avenue Dubai last January 31.
Plotado posed with other honorees, including Catriona Gray, Atom Araullo, Dr. Carl Balita, and many more.
Plotado received the Global Filipino Legacy Award for Film, Real Estate, and Philanthropy, which highlighted his significant contributions across multiple industries and his commitment to philanthropic initiatives that continue to make a positive impact in communities both locally and internationally.
From seeking to settling
Admittedly, settling in the UAE wasn’t really his intention.
“I was simply visiting and exploring possibilities," he said. “However, my sister encouraged me to try my luck and take a chance. Eventually, I secured my first job as a hotel receptionist."
He added: “Life in a foreign land was not easy. I learned everything the hard way, and I went through many painful and challenging experiences. Instead of allowing those struggles to defeat me, I used them as motivation to grow, improve myself, and strive to be the best in everything I do.”
In June 2025, he made headlines for securing a landmark AED 1-billion beachfront development deal in Marjan Island, Ras Al Khaimah, through an exclusive partnership with fäm Properties.
Despite not having a business background, his journey allowed him to meet high-profile and successful businessmen who greatly inspired him to make a difference.
“Through them, I realized that building a business is not only about making money, it is also about creating opportunities, impact, and long-term growth. That realization pushed me to pursue entrepreneurship and eventually build my own path in business,” he said.

Other passions
In January 2025, Plotado’s film "As The Call, So The Echo" was recognized at the 11th Emirates Film Festival in Dubai, winning Best Actor for Enzo Pineda and Best Director for Rusty Palacio Guarin.
“I have always been passionate about filmmaking because it allows us to tell stories that truly matter, stories of struggle, resilience, and success that can inspire and empower others," Plotado said. “For me, filmmaking is not just entertainment; it is a powerful way to reflect real-life experiences and create meaningful conversations.”
He was particularly inspired by Philippine cinema, especially those produced by Star Cinema, which consistently showcase heartfelt and socially relevant stories.
"As the Call, so the Echo" is a short film that tackles the dark and urgent issue of human organ trafficking connected to child abductions. While the film carries suspense and emotional intensity, it is more than just a thriller. It is an advocacy project designed to raise awareness about the harsh realities of human trafficking, especially the risks faced by vulnerable children, and to encourage society to be more vigilant and compassionate.
Other good deeds
Continuing his commitment to education and social impact, Plotado organized a major alumni and community event in March 2025 valued at approximately P3 million, with Mark Herras as special guest. The event honored his alma mater, during which Plotado donated P1 million to the school and personally extended cash gifts to his former teachers and batchmates.
Further strengthening his advocacy for education, Plotado also donated printers, a sound system, a service van, and an e-bike to his former school, Potrero National High School, in Malabon City.
“I come from very humble beginnings. I experienced having nothing. I experienced hunger. I know exactly how it feels to struggle and to live with uncertainty," he revealed. “Because of that, I made a personal commitment to give back whenever I am able. I strongly believe that success has no real meaning if it is not shared. That is why I continuously support alumni and community events.”
For every closed deal and every commission he receives, he makes it a point to give back through his organization, the Aquino Plotado Philanthropy Foundation.
“My purpose is to help create opportunities for others, especially for those who are starting with very little, just like I once did,” he said.
The star-studded ceremony also honored prominent Filipino personalities whose influence spans the entertainment, media, fashion, business, education, and public service.
As someone who has been successful in the fields he ventured into, he has these inspiring words to impart: “Filipinos are often stereotyped as being only in frontline or support roles, but there are so many ways we can prove that we are capable, competent, creative, and world-class.
“Do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Do what you truly love, and do not let fear of other people’s opinions stop you from pursuing your dreams. If you have talent, make sure you use it and showcase it to the world.
“Most importantly, always choose to do the right thing. No matter how hard you work to succeed, if your path is filled with unethical practices, success will never be sustainable. Integrity will always take you further than shortcuts. At the end of it, integrity brings lasting success.”
