After years away from the limelight due to the personal struggles she went through, Katherine Luna has made her astonishing and delightful return to showbiz this year through "Coco Martin's Sigabo." Her comeback marks an exciting fresh chapter in her career, giving her the opportunity to showcase anew her award-winning acting chops and captivating charisma that audiences who witnessed her career in the early 2000s have come to appreciate.
She plays the supporting role of Pia Catacutan, the domineering and spiteful higher-up in the National Criminal Investigation Agency (NCIA), who apparently harbors a deep-seated grudge against Julia Montes' character, Agent Sam Jacinto. Over the past weeks, we've seen Pia actively working to malign Sam and have her removed from service, putting the two characters on a tense collision course.
As we look forward to seeing her next clashes onscreen with Julia in the upcoming episodes, let us revisit the 10 scenes from "Sigabo" that showcased Katherine's impressive acting prowess that many have probably missed in this edition of Kapamilya Toplist.
Even before Pia made her initial appearance, viewers could already sense how uncomfortable Sam and her teammates were just at the mention of her name. Their animosity became even more apparent when Pia finally stepped into their office, as none of them seemed pleased to see her.
From the way she provocatively approached Sam during their first meeting to how critically she interrogated her during the briefing for the NCIA's mission against notorious gold-smuggling syndicate leader Victor "Tigre" Zafra (JM de Guzman), it was immediately clear that Pia would be a thorn in Sam's side.
Instead of celebrating Sam's team's successful arrest of Victor, Pia seized every opportunity to criticize Sam's leadership during the operation. She even recommended that Sam undergo a thorough evaluation over the mishaps that occurred during the mission, detailing her concerns in a report she submitted to Director Fernando Delgado (Soliman Cruz). To make matters worse, she credited Agent Sebastian "Seb" Tuazon (JC de Vera) for the team's success—a move that further revealed her obvious fondness for him.
Pia then confronted Director Delgado, who has long served as Sam's mentor and biggest believer, for continuing to allow Sam to take part in the Zafra case despite her impending suspension. Fortunately for Pia, she managed to change his mind, prompting him to prohibit Sam from delving further into the case while they awaited the higher-ups' decision regarding her situation.
Her animosity toward Sam became even more apparent when, instead of congratulating her team or retracting the disciplinary action she had recommended against Sam following their successful apprehension of businessman Mr. Chan (Mike Castillo)—the sole witness to the Zafra case—Pia berated them for pushing through with the unauthorized operation.
What initially seemed like professional criticism soon became deeply personal, as Pia resorted to attacking Sam's family name, telling her, "Jacinto ka pa naman. Pero sa pangalan ka lang magaling."
She also accused Sam of obtaining her position through nepotism and called her "entitled" for punching Mr. Chan during the interrogation, a move Sam defended by saying that he deserved it for refusing to cooperate with them.
Pia continued to provoke Sam, telling her, "Masyado kang pabida e. Hindi ka bayani, Sam. Ikaw ang pinakamalaking liability sa NCIA ngayon." Luckily, Sam managed to keep her emotions in check and stopped herself from punching Pia as well.
While Pia has consistently been aggressive and scornful toward Sam, viewers get to see a completely different side of her whenever Seb is around. She becomes softer and more seductive as she tries to win him over, showering him with attention and propping him up while simultaneously undermining Sam. But despite all her efforts, Pia's attempts to win Seb over have been in vain, as he remains very much in love with Sam.
And after weeks of speculation about the real reason behind Pia's intense hatred of Sam, the teaser shown at the end of the August 14 episode appears to reveal a shocking connection: Pia is actually affiliated with the Zafras. No wonder she has been so hell-bent on preventing Sam and her team from carrying out their missions and investigations against the Zafra syndicate!
But will Pia's loyalty to the Zafras remain steadfast until the end? Or is there still a chance for her to turn against them and uphold her sworn duty?
