LAS VEGAS — Two Filipino singers from different generations are coming together on one stage as Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha and "The Voice USA" Season 26 champion Sofronio Vasquez prepare for their first concert collaboration.
Misalucha, whose career has spanned decades and taken her from the Philippines to international stages, will join Vasquez for “Powerhouse” at Sycuan Casino Resort in El Cajon, California.
For Vasquez, concert stages now carry new meaning after his historic victory on "The Voice USA," the culmination of years of perseverance that brought his talent to a wider international audience.
But behind the commanding performances audiences see onstage, Vasquez said he has a much quieter side.
“What they see in me onstage is technically me... I really love to charge my social battery,” Vasquez said. “I want to be alone sometimes. That alone time is my rest.”
Life after "The Voice," he added, has also changed his perspective on success and competition. Rather than measuring himself against every new singer who comes along, Vasquez said he has learned to appreciate where he is while continuing to improve.
“Every day there's going to be a better singer than you, so kailangan mo lang maging masaya sa buhay and try,” he said.
And when asked how he hopes to be remembered, Vasquez said his legacy is not something he measures by trophies, titles or fame.
“I would rather choose to be remembered by the way I made them feel,” he said. “Our life is not going to be forever, but the way you made them feel is going to be forever.”
For Misalucha, that same connection with people extends beyond the stage.
A Las Vegas resident for more than two decades, the veteran singer recently joined the Richard Harris Law Firm’s annual back-to-school outreach, helping distribute backpacks and school supplies to local families preparing for the new school year.
Misalucha said even something as simple as receiving a backpack can make a meaningful difference for children and parents. “Malaking bagay ito sa mga bata, sa mga magulang... kahit backpack, it really means a lot already,” she said.
Now, Misalucha is returning her focus to performing — and said she is looking forward to sharing the stage with Vasquez for the first time. “First time kong makatrabaho si Sofronio,” Misalucha said. “We prepared something that everyone will enjoy.”
She also offered a playful explanation for the concert’s title. “Kaya ’yung title, Powerhouse, kasi parehong mga biritera. 'Yung mga baga namin packed with power and energy,” she said.
The collaboration brings together two singers whose careers began in different eras and followed distinctly different paths: Misalucha, an established Filipino music veteran with decades of international performances, and Vasquez, whose career reached a new level after his victory on American television.
“Powerhouse” featuring Lani Misalucha and Sofronio Vasquez is scheduled this Saturday at Sycuan Casino Resort in El Cajon, California, about 35 minutes east of San Diego.
