MANILA -- The timeless songs of Rico Blanco will soon be brought to life on stage in 9 Works Theatrical’s latest production, "Liwanag sa Dilim."
This original Filipino musical will feature 23 of Blanco’s hits, performed by a talented cast of theater actors and actresses.
Directed by Robbie Guevara, the musical promises to deliver a fresh yet deeply personal interpretation of Blanco’s music. Guevara shared his thoughts on how the singer-songwriter’s works naturally lend themselves to storytelling.
“His songs are not just fluffy songs. They all have meaning — personal to him, which can also be interpreted as something personal to me. And if you listen to it on your own, you will also get something different from it as well,” he explained.
Guevara also emphasized the relevance of "Liwanag sa Dilim" in today’s times, highlighting how the show resonates with the evolving socio-political landscape in the Philippines.
“It is very important because times have changed. They constantly change, especially because of our political climate. Our lives are affected in different ways. Each administration brings different challenges for Filipinos,” he said.
However, he clarified that while the musical is not a political play, it will touch on themes that may challenge audiences to reflect on their role in society.
“It’s not to say that this is a political show. It’s not, but there are political touches. It’s important because hopefully, it will make you question who you are in society and what you can do to make it better,” he said.
One of the musical’s cast members is actress Alexa Ilacad, who admitted that her role has been more challenging than she initially expected. While she has yet to reveal details about her character, she shared her experience preparing for the production.
“Ibang klaseng hirap din siya! When I accepted the role, I thought it was gonna be a lot easier, but now that I’m actually doing it and rehearsing — mahirap pala siya, so it’s quite challenging,” Ilacad said.
She also acknowledged the weight of performing Blanco’s music, expressing her deep appreciation for the opportunity.
“Madaming kailangang bantayan, especially the songs of Sir Rico Blanco. I don’t take it lightly talaga — it’s something that I value. Binigyan ako ng platform na makanta 'yung mga hits ng OPM legend natin na si Sir Rico Blanco, so of course, I want to be great,” she said.
"Liwanag sa Dilim" is set to open on March 7 at RCBC Plaza, Makati City.
