Chloe San Jose wants everyone to know that she and boyfriend Carlos Yulo are doing just fine – happier, even – no matter what is being said about them online.
On Monday, September 14, Chloe posted a video of herself and the two-time Olympic gold medalist sharing hugs and kisses during a trip to Fuji, Shizuoka in Japan. She kept the caption short.
"Such a sure thing," she wrote.
The post came just days after a fresh round of public tension involving Carlos's family, this time spilling into the comments section of social media. Chloe traded pointed remarks with Carlos's maternal grandmother, Angelita Poquiz Frisco, in an exchange that quickly turned personal and drew plenty of attention from netizens. She also fired back at Carlos’s mother, Angelica, after the latter and one of her friends threw shade at them.
In the text overlay of her video, Chloe spoke about where she and Carlos stand.
"Living our best life, through everything life throws our way," she said.
She said they are able to weather all of it because of what they have with each other, and because of the people who have stayed by their side.
"There's so much that we go through: the good, the challenges, and everything in between. I'm just truly grateful that we have so much love for each other and support surrounding us," she said.
Chloe also thanked God for carrying them through the hard parts.
"Thank you, GOD, for always giving us the strength to get through it all, for protecting us, guiding us, and reminding us to keep moving forward," she said.
She closed her message by looking ahead.
"I wouldn't want to go through this journey with anyone else. I'm even more excited for everything that's still ahead of us. Here's to more life and more adventures, and everything HE has planned for us," she said.
Her post came in the middle of a week of debate about the couple's future wedding.
In an interview with broadcaster Karen Davila, uploaded on YouTube last September 10, Carlos was asked directly whether he would want his parents, Angelica and Mark Andrew Yulo, present if he and Chloe eventually get married. The gymnast said he would rather keep the day to themselves.
He explained that the wedding is about their relationship, and that he did not want the moment stained by old issues. He said he has already forgiven his parents for many things, but that his forgiveness ends there. If and when it happens, he said, he wants the day to be full of love and joy.
Chloe, seated beside him in the same interview, said she would go with whatever makes Carlos comfortable. She acknowledged that they are, after all, his parents – but said that on the day itself, their eyes would be locked on each other anyway, with or without anyone else in the room.
The reaction to the interview was split. Some Filipinos online said Carlos has every right to protect his peace after everything he has been through. Others were uneasy, saying a wedding is a family affair – a belief that runs deep in Filipino households, where the wedding is rarely just about the couple.
Carlos and Chloe have been together since 2020, marking six years this June. They started out online, with Chloe reaching out to him on social media as a fan while he was training in Japan and she was studying in Australia. They first met in person at the Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, and she has been a fixture at his competitions since then, including in Paris, where he won gold in the men's floor exercise and vault to become the first Filipino to take home two golds from a single Olympics.
The rift with his parents became public around that same Paris campaign in 2024, with Carlos saying the falling out stemmed from how his earnings were handled when his mother was still managing his finances. Their relationship has remained strained since, though Carlos has stayed close to his siblings, Karl Eldrew and Elaiza.
As of this posting, neither Carlos nor his family has publicly responded to the latest exchange. The gymnast is currently preparing for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, where he is set to compete alongside his younger brother, Karl Eldrew.
