Whether you're meeting her for the first time or for the nth time, Karen Bordador's upbeat and charming personality always seems to shine through, which would probably make it hard to believe that this friendly actress and host has already gone through some really difficult challengesn in her life. It was in 2016 when she was arrested for drug related charges which led to a five-year imprisonment at the Pasig City Jail. She was subsequently acquitted of all charges and released in 2021.

In a recent Facebook post, Karen gets reflective on the one decade mark since her initially harrowing experience.

She wrote,”Has it REALLY been 10 years already?!? August 13, 2016 was the day my whole life turned upside down. I swear, I still remember it like it was yesterday. How is it possible that was TEN years ago?!?“

Karen recalled how quickly her life changed at that fateful time. “Nobody is ever truly ready for moments like that. No matter how careful, how guarded, how “prepared” you think you are… when it’s meant to happen, it will happen. Destiny doesn’t ask permission.”

Karen looked further back, sharing how she was feeling uninspired then.

“Months before that, I was still a radio DJ—on my 5th year. And honestly? My spark was fading. I wasn’t as excited anymore. I wasn’t as inspired, my fuel to entertain was running low. I started praying to God for depth. Because blessings were there, yes—I was doing TV shows, endorsements, all the “success” signs… But inside? I felt like I wasn’t really doing what I was created to do. My radio platform started feeling like I was just… playing music. I got into radio to inspire and elevate people.”

“But for me, I felt like my “hugot” was drying up. I had used my childhood pain and my ugly-duckling-to-confidence story as my inspiration— and it was powerful… until it wasn’t anymore,” she admitted. “Then the years passed, and the feeling got deeper: the bigger my platforms became…the more inadequate I felt to fill the space. So I prayed—again and again and again—for wisdom. For experiences that would actually teach me…and not just “sound good” to my audience.”

“Little did I know God would answer me in the most shocking way. The way to inspire is to expire, right?”

In the same post, Karen explained that she chose not to feel anger, but to take the whole experience as a lesson that she needed to learn.

“And He put me in jail— not as a punishment I could explain…but as a profound turning point I could finally understand. (And yes… I was like, “Lord, be honest—joke ba to?!” ) Ang ganda ng buhay ko… I was like—I got this blessing… then God switched the whole script.”

Despite the difficulties, Karen felt that her ordeal was still part of God’s plan, that it was still part of His answer to her prayers.

“I simply asked God for depth and wisdom. But He placed me in the saddest, scariest situation— and it wasn’t even days or months… it was nearly 5 years. Like an actual college course with a specialization,” she shared.

“Grabe naman toh. And honestly—yes, I got what I asked for. I just wasn’t specific… so I let God do His divine intervention. So when people ask, ‘How did you survive?’ Here’s one reason: I had a little whisper in me that this was part of my prayer. That what I asked for —lessons to impart— was going to be lived first… not just heard,” she added.

It has been a full decade since her experience, but it remains a strong reminder for Karen to focus on what truly matters.

“So yeah… it’s been 10 years already. Ang tagal pala sa loob, pero sa labas—ang bilis ng panahon. Every night, I try to slow it down. Meditate. Recalibrate. So I don’t get swallowed by the noise— the kind that keeps pulling us toward what’s wrong and pushing us away from what’s right,” she said. “I know who I am, and I want to be better. And I want to bring as many people with me— into what better can actually look like for themselves.”

Karen chooses to reframe difficult situations into something that strengthens and enriches instead. “Thank you for giving me a safe space to keep sharing. More to come. Because if you’re in a negative circumstance right now…I promise you: you’re not just enduring. You might be becoming.“

“And now that it’s been 10 years… I can say it loud: THAT SEASON DIDN’T DEFINE ME— IT REFINED ME.”

In another post this month, Karen also looked back on how she went through bullying at an early age and how she transformed herself to be better, despite continually facing challenges in showbiz because of her being stereotyped as just having a sexy image.

“They judged me by my looks—so I stopped asking for permission and rebuilt myself.

Kinder-to-highschool me? Bullied. Dark. Very Quiet. Not a ‘fashionista.‘ So much ACNE. No confidence. Labelled a LOSER by the cool kids.  I was invisible and I cried a lot in school bathrooms. This life wasn’t emotionally sustainable and I knew something must change!

In college, I changed everything people could read instantly:

Derma (went to many just to get rid of massive breakouts and scars)

Better clothes (tighter and body fitting clothes)

Walk taller (wore heels)

Speak louder (now raising my hands and participating)

Makeup (learned how to color my face, but not that Great yet)

I pursued modeling to erase the ‘ugly’ image… but guess what? Rejected for endless auditions for a year until I got a yes. But they still boxed me in—the sexy lane.

Girls hated me. Male brands wanted me—yet it didn’t align with who I am or what I stand for. Money there, fulfillment nowhere.

I tried switching to wholesome… but even that couldn’t stick because they still saw the same old sexy label. Then radio. I won Next Hottest DJ on RX 93.1—my voice and intellect finally had a platform. But labels still followed. Behind bars happened. The sexy image resurfaced heavily and supported my negative look to the public and the public perception got uglier.”

Even after joining PBB in 2021, Karen said the focus on developing her image continued. She also gave advice to her followers on how they can better themselves to become more successful in their transformation.

“5 years after I was acquitted, I realized something: I could finally change how the world sees me.

Long enough na para magsimula ulit—new look, new standards, new rules.

So I defined my identity. I decided how I wanted to be treated and what career I wanted—not what society would allow.Because when you don’t dictate the narrative, the public will. Period. Then PBB happened.

And my peers were like, ‘Your look is still 2016—parang left behind.’ So I revamped everything: new clothes, modern makeup, more learning. Because image is everything!

And here’s the truth:

To earn a higher salary, you have to look valuable—never discounted.

Kasi why would people pay you well if you look cheap, messy, or unsure?

But I didn’t expect this part: social media is image-building too.

Everything had to look seamless and curated—so people don’t just see you… they understand you.

Not “exists lang,” but gets it and respects it.

That’s how I took control of my transformation.

People will typecast you—unless you brand yourself first.

If you let other people dictate your image, don’t act shocked when your life starts getting decided for you.

So I didn’t just change my look. I curated the right image—the one that matches my standards, my values, and my voice. And that’s why my transformation hit different: I built a brand that speaks before I even open my mouth.”
