MANILA -- San Beda University overcame a slow start and eventually swept Lyceum of the Philippines University for their second straight win in the 2025 Shakey's Super League (SSL) Preseason Unity Cup on Friday at the Paco Arena.

The Lady Red Spikers recorded a 26-24, 25-18, 25-20 result to claim the solo lead in Group A of the tournament.

Angel Habacon and Janelle Bachar anchored San Beda's offense.

After escaping the first set by the skin of its teeth, San Beda kept Lyceum at bay by building early cushions in the next two frames for the victory, which boosted its chances of advancing into the next round.

Habacon fired 11 points from nine kills and two aces, while tallying five digs for the Mendiola-based squad.

"Ang gameplan lang namin is mag-enjoy and i-compose ang sarili namin. Sabi nga ni coach Kungfu (Reyes), empty your cup palagi para may madadag pang information sa bawat time out na ibibigay ng mga coaches," Habacon said.

Bachar added eight points while Katie Molina and Chynna Castillo finished with seven markers each for San Beda.

The Lady Red Spikers had a hard time shaking off the debuting Lady Pirates in the first set after Johna Dolorito forced an extension off a crosscourt hit.

Bachar quickly answered with a kill before Dolorito surrendered the set on an overcooked spike.

San Beda was in control from there.

"Sinasabi namin palagi na hindi magkompiyansa, ipi-play yung game namin and stick dun sa nasimulan namin and 'yun ang nangyari. 'Yun ang resulta," Habacon said.

The Lady Red Spikers face a litmus test against four-peat-seeking National University in their last group stage assignment in the competition.

Janeth Tulang had 11 points while Joanne De Guzman got eight for the Lady Pirates.
