PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur — For officials of the provincial government of Agusan del Sur, hosting the Palarong Pambansa was literally a dream come true—a vision that began 33 years ago to bring the country’s premier national sporting event for the youth to the province.
Agusan del Sur ready to make history in first-ever hosting of Palarong Pambansa
The historic opening ceremony of the 2026 Palarong Pambansa kicked off Sunday at the Gov. D.O. Plaza Memorial Sports Complex, showcasing local pride, culture, and celebration.
The event opened with an aerial exhibition by the Philippine Army, which drew excitement from student-athletes and spectators alike. It was followed by a field demonstration performed by the youth of the province, who formed various patterns and messages on the field.
The ceremony was immediately followed by the parade of student-athletes from 18 regions and two organizational teams, who beamed with pride as they entered the oval.
Each delegation brought its own gimmicks, chants, and performances to entertain spectators. Some delegations were accompanied by mascots and colorful costumes, while others highlighted their unique culture and showcased what their respective regions are known for.
Despite the drizzle, delegates continued marching proudly as they represented their regions. The parade was led by para-athletes competing in the Para Games, as organizers aimed to give importance and recognition to the sector.
DREAM
Governor Santiago Cane Jr., in his speech, recalled how the province had long dreamed and worked hard to achieve this milestone.
“Today is the tomorrow once dreamed about 33 years ago by former Congressman and former Governor, the late Democrito O. Plaza, the patriarch of Agusan del Sur,” he said.
“This historic hosting stands as the fulfillment of the vision he started for the province and its people. The Palarong Pambansa 2026 is finally here,” he added.
Drawing from his experience as a former athlete, Cane Jr. also stressed the importance of strengthening sports development programs and sustaining government support for young athletes.
He said investing in sports helps shape disciplined, resilient, and empowered individuals who can bring honor to their communities and inspire future generations.
“I was once an athlete myself, so I know how it feels to be given importance as an athlete. That is why we must continue to support our young sports talents and formulate sustainable sports development programs that will help them grow, excel, and achieve their dreams,” he said.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara, in his speech, commended Agusan del Sur for hosting this year’s edition of the Palarong Pambansa.
“From billeting quarters, dugouts, and even the free transportation services, everything has been carefully prepared. It is clear that two years of preparations were devoted to improving what was observed during the Palaro in Cebu and in Ilocos,” Angara said.
He also recognized the sacrifices made by student-athletes in balancing training, academics, and preparation for the national competition.
“Do not worry about podium finishes or medals, because you have already embodied the spirit of the Palarong Pambansa: discipline, teamwork, respect, and resilience,” he said.
INCENTIVES
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was unable to attend the opening ceremony, but in a recorded video message, he assured athletes that the government would continue supporting sports development programs for students. He also announced incentives for medalists.
“Masaya akong ibalita sa inyo, sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon, maglalaan ang Philippine Sports Commission ng mga incentive para sa mga medalista sa regular sports at sa para games bilang pagkilala sa inyong husay. Alam ko na gagawin ninyo ang lahat ng inyong makakaya, ngunit huwag ninyong kalimutan mag-enjoy na rin,” he said.
The Palarong Pambansa torch was carried by seven athletes from Agusan del Sur who had made their mark in international sporting competitions, while Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz delivered an inspirational message to the athletes.
The opening ceremony concluded with a breathtaking drone show, fireworks display, and performances from well-known singers.
The Palarong Pambansa will run from May 24 to 31, 2026.
