MANILA (UPDATED) – Camila Osorio of Colombia completed an impressive comeback to take home the first-ever WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open championship, Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Center.
Osorio dropped the opening set but showed great grit to rally past Croatia’s Donna Vekic, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The Colombian player started off the second set strong, winning three straight games over her Croatian opponent, 3-0.
But Vekic did not go down without a fight, storming back to close the gap to 3-5.
Osorio closed out the ninth game, serving to love, to force a decider in the championship match.
In the third set, it was a seesaw battle until Vekic pulled ahead 4-3 in the seventh game.
After losing the ninth game, the Croatian overcame her emotions, breaking her Colombian foe to level the score at 5-all.
Both players took turns breaking each other’s serve until Osorio saved two break points in the eleventh game to put her one game away from the crown.
In what would be the final game, Osorio kept the momentum on her side, winning the match with an ace.
"I have no words to describe how I am feeling right now. I am super, super happy to be here in the Philippines for the first time and [be] in front of all of you guys. It's been such a pleasure to play here," Osorio said after her win.
"I've never seen this much people in a match for me. It's been great, the support the whole week has been amazing. I just hope you can keep coming, keep enjoying the sport and women's tennis," she told the crowd.
The Colombian player got her revenge on her Croatian foe after getting swept in their last meeting at the Cincinnati Masters in 2022.
With the victory, Osorio gained 125 WTA ranking points on top of a $15,500 prize, or over ₱913,000, in the tournament organized by the Philippine Tennis Association and backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.
As for Vekic, she will get 81 WTA ranking points along with a $8,500 prize, or about ₱500,000, from the tournament.
"Congratulations to Camila for such an amazing match today. Tonight it was really a pleasure playing with you, and I wish the very best for the rest of your team and for the rest of the year," Vekic said to Osorio.
The Olympic silver medalist may not have won the title, but she still won the hearts of the Filipino tennis fans, receiving cheers as she received her runner-up trophy.
"Thank you so much for your support throughout the whole week and tonight. It was really a pleasure playing in front of you for the whole week," she told the crowd.
"It's the first WTA [tournament] in the Philippines but I think you guys see how much everyone enjoys it. So I hope that there will be many more even a bigger tournament because I think this city, these people deserve it. And I hope to come back," Vekic added.
The Philippine Women's Open, the country's first-ever WTA tournament, officially wrapped up on Saturday.
