MANILA -- Tatiana Prozorova, 22, delivered the biggest upset in the Philippine Women's Open main draw on Wednesday.
The Russian player stunned top seeded Tatjana Maria, 7-6(2), 6-4, in their Round of 16 matchup at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The 38-year-old Maria is the highest ranked player in the WTA 125 tournament.
The two tennis players faced off in a grueling first set, which eventually saw the younger Russian player seal the victory through a tiebreak.
In the second set, Maria and Prozorova were toe-to-toe until the latter secured a crucial break to get the 3-2 advantage.
Maria held her serve in the seventh game to inch closer to Prozorova, 4-3.
But the younger player's speed was too much for the veteran from Germany, allowing her to close out the match and book a quarterfinals ticket.

"It's a tough fight as you saw in the score. Maria showed a very good game and it's a good battle. Maybe today, it's just more pressure on her that's why I won," Prozorova said after pulling off the upset.
"I'm very proud of myself for this win because I showed a very good game and footwork. Maria did great, too. It's really tough but I did it," she added.
Up next for Prozorova is Belgium's Sofia Costoulas in the quarterfinals, after beating China's Ye Xin Ma, 6-2, 6-4.
Earlier in the day, Thailand's Lanlana Tararudee defeated Polina Kudermetova, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the next round.
Camila Osorio is likewise off to the quarterfinals after knocking out Japan's Mai Hontama, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
