MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. supports the Supreme Court’s decision that compels Congress to enact an anti-dynasty law, Malacañang said on Thursday, a day after the high court issued the unanimous decision.
Article 2, Section 26 of the Constitution “requires Congress to enact a law prohibiting political dynasties,” the Supreme Court had said, underscoring “Congress’ failure to do so for 39 years constitutes grave abuse of discretion.”
“Wala pa pong binabanggit na desisyon ang SC, alam na natin na isa na ito sa mga priority bills ng Pangulo,” Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a Palace briefing.
Speaker says anti-dynasty bill a priority
“Gusto niya kung maaari sa panahon niya ay maipasa ang anti-political dynasty law,” she said.
Earlier this year, Marcos listed the anti-dynasty law as part of his administration’s priority bills presented during the 3rd Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC).
Castro noted that it is up to the legislative branch to set deadlines and targets for the passage of this measure.
“Hindi natin mable-blame ang mga kinatawan sa Kongreso dahil alam natin na marami silang ginagawang trabaho at alam natin na marami silang dapat na tutukan at unahin,” she said.
Hontiveros urges Senate colleagues to resume deliberations on Anti-Political Dynasty bill
Marcos hails from a political dynasty with his paternal relatives ruling parts of Ilocos Norte, while his maternal relatives occupy key government positions in the Visayas.
In June, the House of Representatives — where Marcos’ son sits as Majority Leader — passed House Bill 8389 on third and final reading.
The measure has since been transmitted to the Senate, but has yet to be tackled by senators in plenary.
