MANILA — Malacañang assured the public on Tuesday that there would be no new taxes to be imposed for now to replace the expected P10 billion revenue loss from the removal of the value-added tax (VAT) on system loss charge in power bills.
“Sa ngayon ay wala pong napag-uusapan kung mayroon pang dagdag na buwis na ipapataw dahil hindi po iyan ang concern sa ngayon ng pamahalaan,” Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a press briefing Tuesday, September 15.
Castro said that the Bureau of Internal Revenue has ways to generate the expected revenue loss from various sources such as administration of proper tax collection, reforms on imposition of VAT on digital services and the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises to Maximize Opportunities for Reinvigorating the Economy (CREATE MORE) Act, among others.
“So lahat ng ito ay dapat na makapag-engganyo pa tayo ng investments, para mas maka-gain po tayo ng maaaring tax na maipasok or revenue na maipasok sa ating bansa,” she stated.
The Palace official underscored that the move aims to ease consumers’ burden from soaring power bills.
“Ang layunin po kasi ng polisiya na ito, na alisin ang VAT sa allowable system loss charges, ay hindi para maisip agad kung paano mapupunan iyong maaaring mawala,” Castro said.
“Ang iniisip po dito ng Pangulo at ng administrasyon ay paano mapapagaan ang nararamdaman ng ating mga kababayan sa mga mahal na mga bilihin at maaaring makadagdag ito kapag mahal din ang babayarin sa kuryente,” she added.
She also expressed hope that lawmakers would soon act to amend the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) to fully realize Marcos Jr.’s vow during his fifth State of the Nation Address of removing the system loss charge in electricity bills.
“Alam ng mga mambabatas na mandato nila ang gumawa ng batas at alam din po ng mga mambabatas ano iyong nais po ng Pangulo para po sa atin mga kababayan. So, nandoon po iyon hanggang ngayon, alam po nila na priority po ito,” she said. “Although ang dami po talagang trabaho ngayon, lalong-lalo na sa Senado, alam nila, batid nila kung ano ang makakatulong sa kababayan natin at ano ang nais ng Pangulo para sa ating mga kababayan,” Castro stated.
