Louis Tomlinson took fans on an emotional trip down memory lane as he celebrated One Direction's 16th anniversary, honoring the band's legacy by revisiting its music and remembering his late "brother," Liam Payne.
Liam passed away on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
On July 24, Louis shared a message on X, thanking their fans, Directioners, for the unwavering support they have continued to show the group over the years.
"16 f------g years of One Direction!!! Blows my mind. Thank you for changing all our lives and the love and passion you all still show is unmatched! Tonight’s going to be a special show. Spending the rest of the day listening to all the bangers and reminiscing! Thank you for all the memories," he wrote.
Louis also paid tribute to Liam, whom he did not name in the post, saying the anniversary made him miss his "brother" even more.
"And to my brother, I miss you every day but especially on days like today. I know we’d have been celebrating today together!"
Thousands of fans responded to the post, sharing how One Direction's music also shaped their own lives and thanking the members for the memories they created together.
Later, Louis revealed that he had spent the day listening to One Direction's entire discography from beginning to end.
"Proper trip down memory lane. Some shockers on this first record hahaha," he wrote in another post.
Throughout the listening session, Louis documented the experience on his Instagram Stories, posting screenshots of the songs he was playing while sharing personal stories and behind-the-scenes memories attached to many of the band's biggest hits.
While listening to "More Than This," Louis fondly remembered Liam discovering a new side of his voice.
"Pretty sure this was when Liam first discovered his falsetto, I remember how proud we all were. He sounds incredible!"
Revisiting "Live While We're Young," he also admitted it was never his personal favorite pop song but acknowledged how massive it became around the world. He also recalled how much fun the group had filming its music video.
He also shared that he still "definitely love" "Kiss You," while calling "Strong" a "special song" and recalling the excitement of hearing its chorus for the first time.
Several tracks reminded Louis of his fellow bandmates, describing "Don't Forget Where You Belong" as "Niall's tune." He added that "Over Again" always reminds him of Niall Horan, and praised Liam's "breakdown chorus" on "Through the Dark."
When "Midnight Memories" came on, Louis called it one of his top three One Direction songs and reminisced about writing it in London.
Listening to "18" also brought back personal memories. Louis shared that it had always been one of his mother's favorite One Direction songs because she gave birth to him when she was 18, making the track feel even more meaningful whenever he performed it.
Among the songs he highlighted were "Steal My Girl," which he described as "one of my favorite singles," and "I Want to Write You a Song," saying he especially loved singing the chorus. He also recalled how proud he was when he first played "Why Don't We Go There" to his bandmates and described "Act My Age" as "really nostalgic."
Louis also reflected on "Infinity," wondering if One Direction had ever officially released a music video for the song. He remembered filming one but believes it may have been shelved before release.
Meanwhile, "Long Way Down" reminded him of how far the band had come. He said the song makes him "so incredibly proud of where we ended up," adding that it was "far too good for a 'boy band.'"
Despite sharing many highlights throughout the day, Louis clarified that he was listening to every album in full.
Louis also listened to and posted more songs, including "Half a Heart," "Better Than Words," "What a Feeling," "Olivia," and several other fan favorites.

One Direction was formed on The X Factor on July 23, 2010, after Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger brought together Louis, Liam, Zayn Malik, Niall, and Harry Styles following their elimination as solo contestants. The group went on to become one of the biggest pop acts in the world before Zayn left the band in 2015. One Direction later announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
